Polk County Commissioners Raiding Indigent Health Care Plan

Polk County Commissioners are considering raiding funds from the 1/2 cent sales tax money that was designated for indigent health care.  This referendum was voted on and passed by the citizens of Polk County to help provide health care for the poor and uninsured elderly. Now, they want to use that money to pay their portion of the Federal Medicaid bill. Again, just another way that the Republicans are trying to balance the budget on the backs of the poor and working class people.

There will be a public hearing on this issue Tuesday, April 26 at 1:30 p.m. in the Board Room with the Oversight Committee.  Please attend, if you can.  If not, make a call to your commissioner and let them hear your concerns.

In Four Months, Republicans Introduced 916 Bills Against Women’s Right To Choose

It’s almost an unbelievable figure — 916. That’s the amount of legislation that has been introduced so far this year, in an attempt to regulate a woman’s reproductive system, and we’re only in April. This information comes from a report by The Guttmacher Institute.

Work 'til You Die

Right now, politicians in Washington want to make you work until you are 69 or 70 before you can retire and collect Social Security, which you pay for.

Not only that, but Republicans in the House of Representatives passed a budget recently that would turn Medicare over to insurance companies and give seniors a voucher to buy their own health coverage – costing them $6,000 more a year when fully phased in. And the Republican plan would raise the Medicare eligibility age to 67, from 65 today.

In the Gulf of Mexico just off Florida’s coast, one year to the day, a faulty valve and subsequent explosion caused one of the greatest environmental disasters in our country’s history. To date, the Deepwater tragedy has claimed 11 rig worker’s lives, spilled nearly 5 million gallons of crude oil into our ecosystem, and has caused an untold amount of environmental and financial damage to Florida and the nation - the crisis and cleanup are still ongoing.

I ask where are we today? What have we done to insure this type of environmental catastrophe will not happen again, and what have we done to correct the financial and environmental burdens connected with this disaster?

Help stop an anti-immigrant bill in our community! How could this happen in Florida?

Your community needs your help! Florida is on the verge of passing an Arizona-style anti-immigrant bill (called Senate Bill 2040, or SB2040).  If our community does not act now, it will be too late (Read in Spanish).
