LEDGER TALLAHASSEE BUREAU
Published: Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 11:14 p.m.
TALLAHASSEE | Florida courts are facing an unprecedented assault on their independence this year as state lawmakers are pushing more than a half-dozen measures that could weaken judicial power and could give the Legislature and governor more influence in selecting judges from the county courthouse to the Florida Supreme Court. The changes also would make it easier for special-interest groups angered by any court decision to oust judges they don't like.
Gov. Rick Scott guided by 3 think tanks: Cato Institute, Reason Foundation, Heritage Foundation
By Janet Zink, Times/Herald Tallahassee Bureau

TALLAHASSEE — Individual liberty, free markets, peace. That's the slogan of the Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank. It, along with the similarly aligned Reason Foundation and conservative Heritage Foundation, have helped shape Gov. Rick Scott's policies on everything from education to health care to transportation. Want to better understand the governor? Take a look at these think tanks.

Reason Foundation's Motto: "Free minds and free markets," Web Site: reason.org
Heritage Foundation's Motto: "Leadership for America," Web Site: heritage.org
FYI: The Heritage Foundation donated a small brass and granite monument to Polk County that sits on the ground floor of the County Building in Bartow.

Is Scott backing down on Fair Districts?
TALLAHASSEE — Three days after taking office, Gov. Rick Scott quietly put the brakes on the approval process for the two Fair Districts redistricting constitutional amendments passed by 63 percent of voters last fall.
Teachers deserve better
Published: Sunday, March 20, 2011 at 1:00 a.m.
Florida Education Commissioner Eric Smith opined last week that Senate Bill 736 elevates "the teaching profession to the esteemed level it deserves." We don't buy that argument. The measure would basically end job security for incoming teachers and weld their pay schedule to student learning metrics that are notoriously hard to define.
