Florida Politics

Together we can make a difference —

Polk County (FL) Democratic Executive Committee —

Legislative Committee - May 14, 2019 —

Dear Polk County Democrats and Friends,
We have been through a rough 2019 Legislative Session in Tallahassee.  Over the past few months the DEC Legislative Committee has been tracking legislation in coalition with Democratic groups throughout Florida.  Our legislative losses have been significant on all fronts (schools, education, healthcare & the environment).  The Polk County DEC Legislative Committee needs your help as we fight to take back our power in the great State of Florida!

VOTE BLUE
and keep the faith.  Many thanks.

Catherine Price
Chair, Legislative Committee
Polk County Democratic Executive Committee

***********************************************************************************************Ask Gov. DeSantis to VETO two bills!

#1 SB 7066 - People Need to be able to VOTE in FL!

This is not the first time that we have seen the people of Florida pass a referendum and then have the Florida Legislature dismantle the intent of the referendum.  In November 2019, Florida voters approved Amendment 4 (by 65%) allowing convicted felons (1.5 Million Floridians) who complete all terms of their sentence, including parole or probation, the right to vote, except those convicted of murder or a felony sexual offense.  Florida is one of only four states in the U.S. which does not provide a clear path back to community electoral participation for such individuals.  Now a handful of Florida Legislators are walking it back and placing unreasonable requirements on these individuals that are seeking to regain their citizenship responsibilities.  Ask DeSantis to VETO this UNPATRIOTIC bill!

#2 SB 7068 - Florida's Environment is STILL Under Attack!Several powerful Florida Legislators have pushed through a bill that authorizes three new toll roads in Florida.  This was done without community input or environmental impact assessments.  Nothing!  Environmental organizations are calling this the worst anti-environment bill in Florida in twenty years.   These roads will go through critical environmental lands.  There is not much green space left in Florida.  We do not need more roads.  We do not need more development and more people.  If we want a future for our children we must fight for our green space in Florida.  Ask DeSantis to say "NO" to this BAD bill!

PROTECT OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS
THANK (5 of 7) Polk County SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERSOn May 8th, Gov. DeSantis signed a bill (SB 7030) allowing Florida county school districts to arm teachers.  The current law allows each county school board to decide if their county will participate in arming teachers.  Five of seven of our Polk County School Board Members have indicated they will NOT vote to arm our teachers!    Please reach out and thank THEM!).  It is important that we stand behind our brave School Board Members on this decision.  They need our moral support  – this is tough stuff!  They are Billy Townsend (Email: billy.townsend@polk-fl.net), Sarah Fortney (Email: sarah.fortney@polk-fl.net), Lisa Miller (Email: lisa.miller@polk-fl.net), Lori Cunningham (Email: lori.cunningham@polk-fl.net)  and Kay Fields (Email: kay.fields@polk-fl.net).   We need to show our appreciation when people make strong, principled stands for our community!

It is also important to let the other two Polk County School Board Members know that we need them to stand up against arming our teachers also. They are Chair, Lynn Wilson (Email: lynn.wilson@polk-fl.net) and Sara Beth Reynolds (Email: sarabeth.reynolds@polk-fl.net).

PLEASE NOTE:   These legislative recommendations were developed by the Democratic Legislative Priorities group, a project of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida. Multiple Democratic and progressive groups participate, including the Legislative Progressive Caucus and the Florida Democratic Party Legislative Committee. The purpose is to collaborate with like-minded Floridians in order to identify and track priority bills during the 60-day session so that we can educate voters to influence the Florida Legislature.  We welcome those who want to assist us with the project. Special thanks to the Democratic Women's Club of Florida for their partnership.
