Polk lawmakers seek gun law changes, but differ on details

Florida’s Legislature is considering a packet of measures that previously might have had little chance of passing.

LAKELAND — School shootings have been occurring for decades, and even the slaughter of first-graders six years ago in Newtown, Connecticut, did not spur major legislative changes.

The Feb. 14 attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, though, seems somehow different. Following the shooting that left 17 dead and 14 wounded, President Donald Trump has said he is determined to do something substantive.

Meanwhile, Florida’s Legislature is considering a packet of measures that previously might have had little chance of passing.
