Tampa, FL - Susan Smith, President of the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida, released the following statement:

Today the Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida is calling on Republican leaders to speak out against the bullying behavior of President Trump and stand up for the brave transgender men and women who have volunteered to serve our country.

In an obvious attempt to divert attention away from investigations into his and his family's connections to a hostile foreign government, Trump is attacking members of our military. As Robert Mueller and House and Senate committees close in on Russian interference with the 2016 election and Trump's questionable financial dealings, he is lashing out at any person or group he sees as an easy target for the hatred and anger of a small segment of bigoted Americans.

The 7000 transgender men and women serving in the military, many in harm's way, deserve to be treated fairly and with respect. Another estimated 134,300 transgender individuals are veterans and should be appropriately honored for their contributions to our security.

It's up to all of us to stand with the transgender community and denounce his behavior.

If our president doesn't understand the basics of human dignity, we hope someone in Republican Party leadership will finally recognize it and say something.

The Democratic Progressive Caucus of Florida is an official charter of the Florida Democratic Party.
