Democrats are energized and ready for action throughout Polk County.  You may be shocked to learn that the numbers of registered Democrats and registered Republicans are almost equal.  You undoubtedly have more Democratic neighbors than you think.  We are speaking up for our values, becoming visible in our community, and organizing to win elections.  Working together, we are all stronger.

This past month has seen organizational meetings for 3 new Democratic caucuses – the Disability Caucus, Education Caucus, and Veterans caucus – and 1 new Democratic club – The Northeast Polk Democratic Club.  Visit polkdemocrats.org to find a club or caucus that might be right for you!

We are now building the infrastructure we need to win in 2020.  We have openings for precinct captains – the true grassroots leaders in the neighborhoods.  We also have volunteer opportunities in the office or in the field, especially for voter registration.  Call 863-668-7199 or visit this link to learn more about joining Team Blue.  We need YOU.

AND speaking of Florida Legislation, as mentioned in Catherine Price's report, the 2019 Florida Legislative session has just ended with only a few Democratic victories.  Here's

Adam Hattersley, Representative in District 59

speaking to this subject at our May DEC Meeting in Bartow.

Vice Mayor Robin Gibson issued a proclamation Tuesday, June 4 designating the week of June 8-15 as LGBTQ Pride Week in Lake Wales.

Lake Wales members of PFLAG were on hand to accept the proclamation. Local PFLAG leader David Jones said 60 percent of Floridians had human rights protections, but they are not in force in Polk County. He asked the city commission to consider adopting a local human rights ordinance to protect all citizens from discrimination. Commissioners did not respond to his request at Tuesday's meeting.

Additionally David Jones was also recognized by the Haines City council when it issued its proclamation recognizing June 8-15 as LGBTQ Pride Week.

Polk County Democrats attended Leadership Blue this weekend - 3 days of trainings, meetings, and networking. We're all fired up and ready to go with strategies to win in 2020!

THIS IS A BIG DEAL AND WE NEED YOUR HELP

Volunteers are the backbone of every political organization.  If you have the volunteers and support them effectively YOU WILL WIN YOUR ELECTION….and that’s a fact that has been proven many times.

Polk County is a swing county in a swing state and it is not an exaggeration to say that it could be pivotal in leading the Democrats to a major victory in 2020.  If we can encourage 45,000 voters to vote the Democratic ticket in 2020 we will win Polk County AND possibly the state of Florida.

Polk County has set specific and ATTAINABLE goals for success in 2020 an NOW is the time to begin the work of achieving these goals.  Here are our major goals for 2020:

  1. Voter registration – 10,000 new registrations
  2. Vote by Mail registration – 35,000 voters
While these numbers look large we will be using a significant amount of technology to support our efforts.

But our ultimate success will be determined by VOLUNTEERS for TEAM BLUE.  With right amount of technology support and the largest number of volunteers we can lower the workload per volunteer.  Each one of our initiatives could take as little as a few hours per teammate.
CURRENT INITIATIVE
We currently have a team of workers in the Polk Democratic Office who have compiled a list of approximately 1000 “returning citizens” (aka Felons) and 300 “likely” Democrats who have recently moved to Polk County.  For both groups we need volunteers help to register them to vote and simultaneously encouraging them to sign up for Vote by Mail.
Teammate Requirements
  1. Two (2) to Four (4) Hours between now and July 1st.
  2. Working in teams of Two (One female and male volunteer is preferred but not necessary).
  3. Each team will have a package of information identified between returning citizens and new residents.
  4. Each Information package will contain Voter Registration forms and instructions for completion plus Vote by Mail literature. If no one is home the volunteer will leave a door hanger encouraging the addressee to contact the volunteer for follow-up.
  5. Each team will have a list of names and addresses to call on that will not exceed 20 addresses. These addresses will be local to the volunteer’s home address. Each list of address will planned into a route to minimize the distance. But the ultimate decision around how many addresses to call on during any given effort and in what order is up to the volunteer. They should make this effort as easy as possible on themselves.
If you can help us please call 863-668-7199 or stop in at our Lakeland office 1549 S. Combee Rd.  In future editions of our newsletter you will see other similar opportunities to volunteer.

PETITIONS -- SIMPLE, EASY YET TREMENDOUSLY POWERFUL

Please download, print and sign each of these three petitions and join the ranks of voters who care about making positive changes one step at a time.  You can turn in your signed forms at any Democratic meetings or events, at the Polk Democratic office at the address below, or mail to the address on the petition. (Please only sign each of these petitions once and sign with the same name and signature as is on your voter registration)

Proposed Home Rule Charter Amendment - Initiated by a non-partisan, non-special interest group of grassroots supporters who believe that county commissioners should ONLY be elected by the voters IN THEIR DISTRICT.

Ban Assualt Weapons - Bump stocks have just been made illegal and its time for Florida Voters to take the next step and band Assualt Weapons.  Do we really need another massacre of students like the recent Parkland killings?

Medicaid Expansion - Sign this petition and help those who need critical medical care but can not afford it.  Many voters in other states have seen the wisdom in this expansion, let's bring Florida along.
